I once had a friend who was a sewer worker, his name was Tadek. A small little guy with a mustache, kind of funny. One day he had a fight with Danusia, his wife, and since she was… strict, he didn’t want to go home on Friday to avoid her biting anger. He stayed in the sewers working overtime and was supposed to be the last to leave. I know because I made sandwiches for him at work then. Unfortunately, the evening passed, and he didn’t come home. Saturday nothing. On Sunday we started to panic, reported to the police, and I took Bolek and one of the sewer worker friends and we went to look for him. I barely fit through the manhole, they make them so narrow.

We went to the fork, Bolek and the sewer worker went left, I went right, because only there I fit. I found him… I mean I recognized him only by the uniform, because he had become somehow taller, heavier, green. Completely wild from fear, he shed his skin and was covered with scales resistant to the wife’s venom. He grew a tail and his tongue forked. I knew he was one of those creatures that eats my Krakow dried sausage from the fridge, but this was too much. I took him under my arm and led him out of the sewers. He just glanced at me with a glowing green eye in the dark.
