I was a guest at the court of the King of the Alders. To say it was an honor is to say nothing at all. I was the first human in a hundred years who could observe the ceremonies and daily life of the elves. The king greatly liked my poetry and wished to create a lyrical work with me that would combine the elves' thousand-year-old knowledge with the temperament of a fragile creature that must experience everything the world offers in sixty years. I was delighted by the peaceful evenings to the sounds of harps and enjoying moon wine on rope bridges hung between houses in the trees. The wine was sweet but not sticky. Just the way I like it. It was during such evenings that I would go to their little library to familiarize myself with the history of their creativity. It was wonderful, different from human, concise. In a word, they could paint an entire scene, so that an epic could fit into a small haiku, and a novel – into a sonnet. They wrote poetry on specially prepared dry leaves. This inspired me to change versification to shorter lines with a higher density of meanings. In the mornings, the king and I would sit down to create. We managed to combine fire and water. We named our joint song ‘Tales from the Leaves’.
