Five Clans
Tame the Naqali Djinn!
Your caravan has crossed the border of the Land of a Thousand and One Nights and reached the legendary Sultanate of Naqali. For many years, the throne of the city-state has remained vacant, as the respected sultan passed away without heirs. However, soothsayers have foretold the arrival of strangers who, influencing the five clans, will fight for control over the infamous land. Will you be the one to fulfill the prophecy? Tame the ancient djinn and lead the five clans, and the Sultanate could be yours! Five Clans is a strategic game with a modular board, in which we take on the role of foreigners arriving at the legendary city-state of Naqali. By manipulating the titular clans and enlisting ancient djinn, we will try to gain influence in the city. The winner is the person who scores the most points from goods collected during the game, gathered tiles, and acquired allies.
How does it work?
At the beginning of each round, all players participate in an auction to determine the order of actions. The currency is gold coins, a valuable resource to manage wisely. After determining the order, participants will take turns playing their rounds according to the following steps:
The player chooses a tile that still has some clan member figures on it. Then they take all the figures from that tile and begin moving them to adjacent tiles, leaving one figure on each tile until they run out. When the player finishes moving the clan members, they take the figure they placed on the last tile, along with all figures of the same color already on that tile before the move. If after taking all figures of a given color from the tile no figures remain on it, the player immediately takes control of that tile by marking it with one of their camels. At the end of the game, players receive points for tiles where their camels are located. After finishing the clan members' move, the player proceeds to perform an action based on the type of figures they have in hand. Each represents one of the clans with individual traits and abilities that will bring the player victory points at the end of the game.
After completing the clan actions, the player performs an action based on the type of tile where they ended their move. Similar to the clans, each terrain has its own effect described in the instructions.
In this way, players alternately perform their actions until one of them runs out of camels or the situation on the board prevents moving clan members.

Thanks to the various options available each turn, we have a chance to make a profitable move. Even if not everything goes exactly as planned, we will have many other opportunities to take advantage of. Bruno Cathala's game is an extremely original take on worker placement board games. Instead of occupying spaces with appropriate pawns, the key is removing them from the board and moving them. This innovative mechanic forces players to change their way of thinking about building strategies!
